Vibrant Corporation was a major presence at this year’s Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation (QNDE) conference held in Provo, Utah. Vibrant engineers gave two presentations and figured prominently in a third. The first presentation, titled “Part-to-Itself Model Inversion in Process Compensated Resonance Testing”, was presented by Alexander Mayes and discussed how a comparison of a part’s resonance in two different states can be used to quantify the physical changes caused by in-service loads and/or damage. The second, titled “Detection and Quantification of Creep Strain Using Process Compensated Resonance Testing Sorting Modules Trained with Modeled Resonance Spectra”, was presented by Julieanne Heffernan and described Vibrant’s use of part models to overcome data driven limitations in the inspection of physical components. A third presentation, given by Dr. John Aldrin of Computational Tools, was titled “Uncertainty Quantification of Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy for Material Property and Single Crystal Orientation Estimation on a Complex Part” and examined how various meta-modeling techniques can be used to quantify and mitigate uncertainty in PCRT modeling.
These presentations stemmed from a project sponsored by two Air Force Research Laboratory contracts with Vibrant for the development of PCRT modeling tools and techniques. Vibrant is collaborating with Dr. John Aldrin at Computational tools and graduate student Brent Goodlet at the University of California Santa Barbara. All three of the team’s presentations will be accompanied by papers to be published next year in AIP Conference Proceedings.
“The QNDE conference gathers the leaders in NDE research from around the world. Vibrant is honored to give two presentations and be part of a third at QNDE this year,” said Eric Biedermann, Vibrant’s Principal Investigator for the modeling projects. “Our entire project team is doing a fantastic job pushing the boundaries of PCRT.”
